WHICH VDI?  NVDI and Nova VDI spring to mind, and the Cybercube boards' VDI.  

To me, the question really is, why would you want AES and VDI to be reentrant?

X11 doesn't draw anything in parallel.

The actions can all be buffered - a metafile in a pipe, effectively.
Make the buffer of length one, and you just need those semaphores you
described.
