For me the flasing happened only in the console and this was caused
by a race condition in the xcounout handler xcounout2.xdd installed.

For non-concole-wterms (ie NO -c option) the cause of the flashing is wterm
switching off the cursor when receiving key-strokes from the server and
switching it on again after the processing is done. So it looks like wterm
is indeed receiving stuff from the server (possibly \0's?) Can you check
what it is receiving?
