hm $TTY as standard? don't think so. It is not specified in my unix
books, and is not present either in bsdi. 
Same answer regarding $tty. 

However nothing stops you to include a 
tty=`tty`
TTY=`tty`
in your login script. (.bash_login, or tcsh's)
/etc/profile MIGHT even be possible too.
