I don't think MiNTs serial-routines are inferior, as it actually use
HS-Modem for it's serial-devices when HS-Modem is installed. As I
understand it, MiNT removes the cookie in order to prevent other
programs that accesses the serial-routines directly to mess up for
MiNT and processes that use the serial-devices.

So when you use a device, you actually use HS-Modem.
