Erm... so how are you getting the AES version? This is the only (simple)
method that I can think of.

The fact that global[0] is filled with the AES version after calling
appl_init() is documented in the compendium with no caveats. AFAIK,
this is the only documented method of finding out the AES version
[its certainly the easiest].
