Hi Guido!

Shame on you!  You must have had a black-out.  Of course, Katherine
was right and you were wrong.

The child sees a return value of 0 from fork(), and the parent
sees the child's pid.

The other hints (zeroing the gemlib's internal structure or calling
appl_exit in the child process) may still work.
