  Okay, I think I'm following what you did. Needless to say, as with most
  MiNT/Unix subjects, there are multiple ways of arriving at the same
  destination. ;-)
  
  Mine goes MiNT -> init -> login -> GEM -> N.aes (which launches Thing)
  
  There is something about my installation though, that K.Ellis and I
  never could figure out. I can not start N.aes/Thing from *the* console
  <F-10> at bootup/login. From the login: prompt, after booting up, if
  I do an <alt><F-10>, my screen goes black, and nothing works until I
  reboot. Thats why I put the GEM statement in my passwd file (upon
  K. Ellis's suggestion). This works fine... Don't know if maybe my
  hardware setup has something to do with this. I'm using a 17" monitor
  that does both RGB and SVGA (multisynch, even down to ST 15). Oh well,
  it does -work-...  ;-)
  
  PS after going through my normal bootup, and looking at my Thing 
     desktop, I can switch to any other vcon <alt><F1-9> and back to
     the console <alt><F-10> with no problems. Just not at bootup!
