I don't recall seeing those at all. in fact, see below.

Adding extra folders (for historical or distribution-specific basis)
is still OK as far as FHS goals are concerned, since it's only about
a minimal compliance level in regards to where common system binaries
are located and how the main folder hierarchies are named.

Well, maybe someone will figure out a way to hide those, but
still allow calling drives as /<letter>.

PS: _WITHOUT_ making the whole / chmod'able, please. Just removing
the routine that fetches the available drives and displays them
    in / should be enough.

Or, if the goal is simply to place GEM applications on the hierarchy,
/opt/<package>, /usr/opt/<package> or /usr/local/opt/<package> works
well, to install CAB or other apps capable of accessing Minix/ext2:

/opt/geminit
/usr/opt/thing <- when used with Geminit, otherwise in /usr/local/opt
/usr/local/opt/cab
/usr/local/opt/aftp

...and so on.

Ouch! Please _don't_ start spreading the RSC's and configs around!
GEM apps expect everything within the application's directory, and
it really is more convenient to manage that way, for the user.
