When I tried the memory protection I got freezes frequently although I
have no tool like that. When a program got killed due to a memory
violation that was displayed on the console, but when a freeze occured, no
message appeared.

However like I mentioned in a previous message on this list, I discovered
that with MiNT versions later than 1.15.1 beta 1.1 (if I get the version
numbering correct...) I get the freezes anyway, so it is now difficult to
determine whether those freezes were related to memory protection, or the
newer MiNT version, or both.
