[MiNT] kernel development
Hello,
I noticed we have two similar files, /etc/host and /etc/hostname
whose usage remains unclear. While /etc/hostname is used by the
'hostname' command, the other file remains a mystery.
Anyhow, I noticed that HOSTNAME is evaluated by 'login' and the
shells, plus a lot of other things. While one could purposely
define "export HOSTNAME=`hostname`" in their /etc/profile and
/etc/csh.cshrc (or in mint.cnf), why not have the kernel look
for /etc/hostname file and , if found, export the value as the
HOSTNAME string?
Another thing, this time a bug:
Every time I switch floppies, the kernel freaks out. Let's
say I boot as normal with something in the drive. Then, I
change floppy and request drive B. Everything is fine. But,
if I cd /a after, the shell crashes and I am returned to the
login: prompt. Why? Isn't there a clean way for the kernel
to know when somemone changed a floppy? The same thing goes
if I change drive from Thing. Boom! Thing vanishes.
Any way this could be fixed?
Btw, I use NEWFAT on both A and B (B is also VFAT-enabled)
and have a single floppy drive, if this helps.
Anyhow, awaiting your comments. ;-)
