This depends on the shell (i.e. in bash/pdksh, a pwd without arguments lists the logical path, not the physical), and also happens when using amd for home directories, but have yet to experience any problems with this. And about test -d /home/foobar failing: It's no problem to always add /. for -d tests, i.e. test -d /home/foobar/. The dot-directory is documented to always exist - at least in MiNT, but I'm quite sure this applies to Unices as well.
