So, why cannot this method work on MiNT too?
Sounds like an essential upgrade to me.

Anyhow, it still doesn't resolve a strange bug I have been having,
since a few days:

'grep' in rc.boot doesn't find /etc/fstab when it is started by 
INIT, but if I run 'sh /rc.boot' from a login shell, it works.
