I can tell you upfront that most people never even heard of UUCP
in their whole life, let alone used it.  

However, some of us still _do_ use terminal logins, but seldom.
I myself have a VT420 attached to Modem1, but I almost never use
it; it is mostly there for the occasional house guest.

So, in effect, most people indeed use those serial ports only for
a normal modem connection, most likely over PPP.
