Smail cannot work out of the box, it always needs some configuration by
hand. As far as I remember the transports file is the sample that comes
along with the smail sources.

No idea, sorry. I use qmail here.
I personally prefer qmail because with serialmail it is very easy to
configure to spool mail via a temporary PPP link (it is also said to be
much safer and quicker but that is currently not much of an issue for me).
Unfortunately qmail heavily relies on named fifos which are not available
under MiNT. The original sendmail would of course be an option too but
IMHO sendmail is not the MTA of the future. At least qmail (and maybe
exim) have really obsoleted sendmail nowadays.
If I see it right, then smail is not supported any longer. The
developpers now count on exim. Maybe somebody should have a try to get
exim running on MiNT. I don't think that smail is worth investing a lot
of work in today.
