The basic window manager was perhaps "W" ?

BTW, I don't know if anyone is interested, but in looking for GEM stuff, I
found a very basic GEM system for X-windows.

kind-of the opposite of X.app ;>

(I think it doesn't support existing GEM binaries, but it to make porting
easier)
