I am looking for a solid solution for that problem too. The less-
solid solution is: Use the old smail that came with KGMD. The 
sparemint one seems to be compiled with more security options which 
make it unusable as a local MTA. Obviously this can be reconfigured, 
but I don't understand enough of smail to find out how. :)

The problem is basically, that when Pine uses a local smail to send 
mail, it connects to the localhost and (correctly) reports 
"localhost" as it's hostname. Smail seems to have a switch enabled 
that only finds hostnames with dots valid.

This isn't even the last problem you'll bump into with this smail, it 
will also complain that your from-address is incorrect since it 
cannot resolve it, that is if you're offline while sending (queueing) 
messages with Pine.

Anyway, simply replacing the smail binary with the old KGMD one 
helped me get on with my life. If someone else can tell us all how to 
really configure smail to become useful, I'd be much obliged. :) I 
can't make heads or tails of the documentation.
