Quick reply as I have to go home presently...

I have never had any trouble using VT100 on Toswin or virtual consoles
(using screen).

I have specifically been able to run pine using VT100 without any problem.
I have never seen the problem you describe.

I am very surprised that it doesn't work when you use Toswin configured in
VT100 mode. I don't know the details, but I thought it nearly fully
implemented VT100, and I don't recall ever running into a case where it
didn't work.

I can only suggest trying screen.

You can further diagnose the problem in numerous ways, but I don't have
time to explain how right now, sorry.
