Just tried it with cross-compiler under Linux, compiles just fine. So
it's problem of setup. I'd suggest following:

- use cross compiler as well (it's safer but not sufficient for all
packages, as not every one supports cross compilation); it's
--host=m68k-atari-mint parameter btw
- use aranym-mmu with MMU enabled kernel (better control of what has happened)
- compile & install newest mintlib (from cvs) with Alan's patch for
stack size setting (i.e. you set it to some bigger value if needed)
- optionally, install newer gcc (from Keith's site RPM or from mine .tar.bz2)

I'd go for cross compilation, binaries are available for Windows,
Linux and Mac OS X (see Vincent's web)
