It's rarely used to select an edit-field but I need it, and it's logical to use insert (e.g. think of Alt-insert).go to that field. You shouldn't have to activate it with a key click like Space or Insert before typing the input.
You still don't understand what I mean, so I send you a picture. The edit-field "Fill-patterns" is a button and edit-field at the same time. Is this so difficult to understand?
To mimic a muose click on a button or checkbox then a keystroke is needed.On windos and linux this is Space I believe.
