Well spotted. I hadn't copied the SYNTAX folder from my 502 installation.
The one on the XaAES website isn't a full version.
With the *.SYN files in SYNTAX all is well again.
I don't get any mad screens like your screen shots just some lines
underneath every text line when scrolling up with the up arrow screen
widget or by dragging the slider up.
If I re-size the window then the effect disappears.
