I'm sure Jean-Luc meant he does not understand the way it works *in MiNT*. 
What you're describing above is what us French speakers have experienced since 
we 1st started using computers.

The FreeMiNT documentation makes it sound as if French-speaking users will 
have dead keys working if the install the french.tbl table.

On the same topic, what is the difference between french.tbl and french-
pl.tbl?
