If this is the Linux dosfsck, I would say that it depends on how large
and full file system you have and how much RAM you have.

At least earlier Linux dosfsck kept in RAM contents of FAT and all cluster
and directory content information while it does the checks.  On multi-GB FAT
partition which is full of small files, this may at worst consume hundred(s)
of MBs of RAM and MiNT systems don't have swap...


Latest upstream dosfsck seems to have some memory saving changes, but
it seems to be lacking some stuff from a patch attached here:
