On Linux fstab serves as a description for filessystems and has
nothing to do with "drives".

This should not be a matter of taste. The /dev directory serves as a
point in the filesystem where, among other things, hardware is exposed
to the OS. Filesystems are part of hardware thus should be present
under /dev as raw devices but be not accessible for normal use. As in
all unix-like systems an fstab entry should map the device (with
appropriate options) to a mount point.
