Samba has an assertion when the file handles are less than 100, which
I'm sure you hit, so 128 seems like a good maximum number for now.

I assume this 32 bit is just a 4 byte bit pattern that dates from the
single-TOS days.


Samba has a default of 10000 files so other OSes must deal with file
handles differently.

Samba interrogates the operating system for the maximum, regardless of any defaults.
