ext2 have generally much better performance as fat due to a much better
design. Especially on some worst cases like many thousands files in a
folder FAT is very, very slow (but the routines work at most in O(n) and
not O(n^2) as under MagiC :-))

You can try to increase FAT performance with a bigger filesystem cache.
