As / refer to the root of the current drive of the current application.

That's basically what I wrote too. :o) However, I'm wondering to what
extend the UNIXMODE is checked for this (rU is supposed to mean "drive U
is root").

UNIXMODE is a mintlib feature. Don't matter much today as mintlib as default already change to u: if FreeMiNT is present.
