Been there, done that with far too many systems. I've done Ubuntu updates
that trashed the system so bad it took two weeks of solid effort to get
them back to usable.

Yes, I have updated XaAES and mint.prg but that is very different to
wiping all the installed packages and installing from a new distro
system or wiping the entire partition and starting from scratch.

I am just lost as to why effort should be spent on creating a new distro
when there are so many other aspects that need work.
Hmmm what? No, just change your mint.cnf to point INIT=u:/mintdrv/old/bin/bash

Then after it boots do export PATH=$PATH:/mintdrv/old/bin:$PATH:/mintdrv/old/sbin and you should be good to go to delete everyting and move it back. I trash my systems several times daily it feels like testing new stuff. Classic latest example is mintinit vs oldstuff packages.
