Maybe /usr/GEM/bin ;)

No, you don't need anything special (ok, you need the dejavu fonts 
installed & the freemint 1.17 kernel for fully working TCP connects), 
but you should start it from command line with the shell script 
contained in the package.
And you should make sure that it is startet with the -v commandline 
argument (look into the shell script, and maybe adjust it...) when 
running into problems...
because that enables verbose log and maybe it tells you where the 
problem lies.
