You are right.That file is small and contains only instructions compatible with both 680x0 and ColdFire, so it is not strictly necessary to rename it to .S (to enable preprocessor support).
But for more consistency, you can rename it if you like. In that case, you should also get rid of $(SOBJS:.s=.o) in Makefile.objs.
