Which subdirectory was make in when iit failed?

Looks like there is a missing

include $(top_srcdir)/RULES

in some subdirectory Makefile. In general, the Makefiles seem to be prepared 
for that, although i never used that myself. Its possible though that it only 
works in the toplevel directory, any subdirectory only has a install-recursive 
target.
