I had assumed the builds were automated a long time ago or was it
just the kernel ?

Over a year ago I automated some application builds at work with TeamCity.
These would be regarded as legacy apps so it required a huge, manual, code
reconcilliation which made it slow progress but well worth it.

Everything just builds from subversion and deploys.

Repeatable, reliable, more confidence, less stress, less effort :-)
