I must be missing something... I used either HDDRIVER or an ICD util
(which came with my Falcon) to break my 900MB audio partition into a
150MB MiNT partition and a 750MB Linux partition. Granted, I backed
up all the other partitions JIC, but I didn't have to restore anything
to the partitions I kept. So what's the problem?

That's true, it can be risky. But you could simply read the boot sector
and save it to an emergency boot floppy, with a program to restore it,
to guard against the boot sector getting trashed, right? (Probably a
good idea in any event, repartitioning or no!)
