Slow keyboard Input from some GEM programs...

Some GEM programs, under Mint (KEMD), many I really like to use, take
several seconds per character when I'm typing input on the keyboard on my
system (Stock Falcon 030, VGA, 14meg, NVDI 3.2, HD-Driver 5.1, AES 1.4).

For example, Edith text editor...
Needless to say, it makes trying to use these programs frustrating to the
point of uselessness...when it takes forever just to type in a single line
of text.

Another example would be using ConNect to launch tcsh in an terminal
window.  Keyboard input is horribly slow in this case.

Is there something I can tweak that might speed matters up a bit?
I've tried dropping the number of colors in my desktop, dropping the
number of accessaries or back-ground tasks that are running, and other
common sense approaches to no avail.
