This is the fault of aMAIl (and Newsie?)
If you write a message with aMAIL the editor comes up and place the cursor 
at the top of the header which is visible as is the signature which is 
placed just after the header separated with one blank line.
Both the header and the signature shouldn't be visible during editing.

If one doesn't know that the blank line is needed -thanks for the tip- 
this is very easily overlooked.
