Sorry, I don´t quite get this:
What exactly do you rename to ttya?
I have something like this in mi mint.cnf:
ren u\dev\modem2 \u\dev\ttyb
And you´d rename it to ttya in this case? Would this make any
difference?

For Connect I have:
ren u\dev\HSMODEM2 \u\dev\modem2

Well, that´s how it _doesn´t_ work right now at least not with MiNT-Net.
But I´m not going to give up :-)
