PS:  shutdown now reports a different message than usual:

pid 92 (shutdown): assert ('x') failed at line 1173 of pipefs.c.
FATAL ERROR. you must reboot the system.

Also, e2fs still isn't cleanly unmounted, which e2fsck reports
at bootup.
