[MiNT] environment strings

I would prefer if people stopped adding more of those, as the
strings don't export well to Bash and other shells already. 

For instance, if HOSTNAME is only in MINT.CNF, the shells won't
find it (and most other environment strings) in secondary level,
such as after using "su" to perform maintenance tasks.

I recall that SSH (among others) uses /etc/environment to fetch
those.  Couldn't we also migrate to this more portable method?

ZSH and other shells have commands to load such global files and
it would really simplify the administrative process for command
aliases and global host environments:  one big list, instead of
duplicating the same list in 3 or 4 different syntaxes.
