On the TT, using both -m68030 and -m68881 at compile, it takes
about 30 seconds to calculate the keys (at bootup), and 10 to
login. About the same as under Linux on i386.

On a 25 MHz Stacy, it takes about 15 minutes for SSH to calculate
the keys and 5 minutes to login. On an 8 MHz ST, I wouldn't even
bother; one might as well take a day off between packets.

So, to re-iterate what I've already said:

SSH _can_ be compiled to run on any ST, but the memory and CPU
requirements, and the slow hardware, make it completely unusable.

What makes the difference is faster hardware and then using the
facilities this more potent hardware provides, namely newer CPU
instructions and the presence of an FPU; not using them makes it
pointless to even try porting anything.
