In 1.20 it definitely was thingreg.ovl, I don't know about 1.27 (never
really used it, I think I used N.Thing at the time, and now I'm using
1.29b).

Anyway, I suggest you try without Thing (perhaps with an older version
of N.Thing or whatever you might have) to confirm that it actually *is*
Thing that's the problem.
