I was getting tired reading the rest of this thread.
Type "gcc --print-file-name=crt0.o". That should display the location
where gcc looks for crt0.o.
BTW, what you describe here is certainly not a linker bug (the linker
makes no assumptions about the paths where your libs or startup modules
reside). Search paths are the compiler driver's domain.
