I posted about this exact same problem a while ago.. looks like my 
posting never made it to the list. :) I already saw ZPQ's hint that 
it might be looking for /usr/temp (doh, and I thought I was clever 
checking for /var/tmp). :) Thanks, ZPQ, will try it as soon as I quit 
amail, for which I will have to send this message first. :)

But this means no one either saw my posting about the fact that the 
latest smail rpm is compiled with so many security features switched 
on that it's become unusable (how do I tell pine to say "helo 
localhost.localdomain" since "helo localhost" is not allowed 
according to smail?) and the fact that all recent Pine versions crash 
with a "received abort signal" when you try to configure it.

Right?:)
