  what about trying older mintib RPMs (0.58, 0.57.6, ...) -- it's
pretty fast to install and with some luck we isolate problem at least

That was my point, I did install older mintlib and it does work.  The
only thing I must try is gcc 4.4.2 with older mintlib but I am assuming
it will be fine.
