from what I can see it is possible for both AES and Teradesk to have
different bg images (one each)

Why? When the desktop tree is installed it's there and is always displayed. XaAES only displays a tree when no other app has installed a desktop object tree.

The only issue I have with this (img textures) is that I was unable to
find a program that runs on ARAnyM that can produce XIMG > 265 colors
that work in XaAES

Hmm... I have not tried this myself. But since Smurf is open source (and in the FreeMiNT CVS) it would be possible to correct it's IMG saving routines.

If we are lucky, and Teradesk uses a generic Tree Object, there may be
other programs that could also use it. How lucky so we feel?

Why mix Teradesk into the picture? It would be a general solution. The root window (desktop) is redrawn by the AES itself, not the application. The application only registers the object tree with the AES. So by replacing the background object with an image this would work with most desktops.
