I don't know what the "proper" way is, but I just run the init-script
from mint.cnf. I haven't noticed any problems with this. I don't run any
servers on the Milan or log on as any other user than root. Maybe this
stuff doesn't work without init, I don't know.

You must delete the link first, then create a new.

Why not? Just symlink n_aes.sys to /usr/bin/xaloader.

As said many times before - if you have several system folders you also
have a kernel for each folder. Instead of rebooting the same kernel and
attempt to use the system folder from a different version, just boot
another kernel with a working system folder. That's much easier and
safer, and it can be done today.
