I tested with ARAnyM, which is very fast.
Inside RAND_poll(), there is some machinery to avoid blocking during more than 10ms. Maybe there is a timing problem between ARAnyM, OpenSSL, /dev/urandom and select()... 



Does it happen with the FireBee rather than ARAnyM ?
