I agree, having a gzipped tarfile spread over multiple volumes is not very
wise, since one error on one of the volumes makes the rest of the volumes
unreadable.

But what if gtar compresses each file individually? In this case an error only
damages one file again.
I've looked around a bit on a SUN, and there is a program called "bar" which
does exactly that. The problem is that I can't find any sources, or an
equivalent program.
