broken daemons...

Just returning home after a one-month leave, I notice that none
of my Inet daemons work anymore (even using Localhost):   

   Telnet    Login prompt, followed by "Connection closed by remote"
      FTP    "Service not available", Connection closed by remote"
     HTTP    "File not found"

Inetd.conf is correctly configured (everything WAS fine when I left)
and the file has not been corrupted.  I tried replacing the executable,
but this doesn't seem to cure it either.

Any ideas what could have gone wrong? Thanks.
