If you think so, don't touch these options in the boot menu. Everything is
"on" by default, so for the effect you write to occur, you must explicitly
switch the appropriate menu entry to "no", and yet confirm that with
"Return". Not to say that to do all this you must explicitly invoke the
menu on the screen. To do that by accident one has to suffer schizofreny.

If you want to disable just a single module, not all, nothing prevents you
from rebooting to TOS and renaming it, as you suggest. Using the boot menu
is not obligatory.
