Serious... it needs 2 GB !! wow.... my current ext2 fs is only 2 GB. 
I do not like to have it too large as any fsck needed will take some time.

I plan to have a spin on another spare hdd. Will see how it goes.

I've installed gentoo MiNT on an aranym setup. Install plain mint + commandline shell, untar / ungzip the package to the root partition, reboot and your done - at least that works when you have an clean system
where no present software get's overwritten.

Not all software was running clean. Maybe an problem with aranym, but I doubt that. For example python crashed.

Using sparemint + gentoo isn't an good idea. One disitribution shouldn't be mixed with another one, I believe it's ok to mix some packages, but it really should be done for single packages, only. And you must
know if it replaces shared files...
