This looks very much like there are bad sectors on the disk. Never 
move a hard-disk before it has completely spun down!

Run e2fsck -c or mkfat -c (I never did the latter),

Termination could also be an issue but not very likely.

The question why it worked under Magic and TOS remains. You should 
compare the copy and the original in this case.
